What does spring count in a mattress actually mean?

When shopping for a mattress, spring count is one of the terms you’ll see everywhere. But what does it actually mean, and does a higher number always mean a better night’s sleep?

In this blog, we break it down simply, explain the difference between pocket sprung mattresses and open-coil mattresses, and clarify the common confusion between spring count and firmness grades.

What is spring count?

Spring count refers to the number of springs inside a mattress.

Traditionally, this number is based on how many springs fit into a king-size mattress (150 x 200 cm). It’s used as a benchmark so that shoppers can compare models more easily, even if they’re buying a double or single.

A higher spring count usually means the mattress has smaller, more responsive springs that can contour more closely to your body. But the number alone doesn’t determine comfort.

Pocket sprung mattress vs open coil

Pocket Sprung Mattress

A pocket sprung mattress contains thousands of individual springs, each sewn into its own fabric pocket. This design allows every spring to move independently, giving more personalised support and reducing motion transfer.

Best for: couples, pressure relief, long-term durability, and a more luxurious feel.

Open Coil Mattress

An open coil mattress uses a single piece of metal wire linked into a network of springs. This type is lighter, cheaper, and generally less supportive than a pocket sprung model.

Best for: guest rooms, occasional use, lightweight sleepers, or tighter budgets.

Does a higher spring count mean a firmer mattress?

Many people assume a higher spring count means a firmer mattress. This is one of the most common misconceptions we see when helping people choose a mattress at our shop in North Yorkshire.

But firmness and spring count are completely separate measurements. So what does determine firmness?

  • Spring tension: how tightly the coil is wound

  • Gauge (thickness) of the wire: thicker wire = firmer feel

  • Comfort layers: wool, foam, hemp, cotton, latex, or other fillings affect the top-layer softness

  • Construction style: for example traditional tufting vs pillow-top

Firmness is about how the springs behave, not how many there are.

Does a higher spring count help with longevity?

A higher spring count doesn’t just improve comfort, it also increases the lifespan of your mattress. With more springs sharing the workload, each spring compresses less under your body weight, reducing wear and tear over time. This means the mattress maintains its shape, support, and responsiveness for longer. In pocket sprung mattresses, a denser spring system prevents sagging, minimises motion transfer, and keeps the mattress performing at its best for many years. So while a higher spring count often feels more luxurious, it’s also a smart long-term investment in durability and consistent support.

So what spring count should you look for?

Here’s a simple guide to help narrow it down:

  • 1,000–1,500 springs

A good option for an everyday pocket sprung mattress or for a spare room. Offers balanced comfort and support for most sleepers without overcomplicating things.

  • 1,500–3,000 springs

A noticeable step up in precision, comfort, and long-term durability. Great for couples or anyone wanting more body-contouring support.

  • 3,000+ springs

Provides enhanced luxury, pressure relief, and responsiveness.

  • Ultra-luxury (up to 12,500 springs)

At the highest end of our Yorkshire mattresses range, some models feature up to 12,500 individually nested springs. This level of craftsmanship offers exceptional contouring, edge-to-edge support, and a truly premium sleep experience.
